City of Brussels

  Blazon
  Territory

The vast City of Brussels is made up of six separate entities :

  • the "Pentagon" (downtown area)
  • Laeken/Laken
  • Neder-over-Heembeek
  • Haren
  • the southern axis Louise/Louiza-Roosevelt
  • the European area (Leopold, Schuman and the squares).

The "Pentagon" is what lies between the boulevards of the inner ring. This is historical Brussels, literally brimming with all kinds of riches. Today, thanks to major renovation works destined to attract new inhabitants, the downtown area is increasingly regaining its charm of old.

The large territory of Laeken/Laken, the northern axis, ensures control over the border zones, which include industrial sites located along the Willebroeck canal. Ever since Expo 1935, Laeken/Laken has been an extremely popular residential area. In fact, the construction of the Grands Palais/Grote Paleizen, the Olympic stadium, the Planetarium, as well as the Centenaire/Eeuwfeest and Heysel/Heizel areas date back to this period. This northern district has retained all the charm of a semi-rural zone, combining the advantages of the city with those of the country.

The southern axis, towards the Bois de la Cambre/Ter Kamerenbos, bordering on Saint-Gilles/Sint-Gillis and Uccle/Ukkel, is the third entity. Its magnificent townhouses and deluxe boutiques make Avenue Louise/Louizalaan a favourite of strollers.

The commune of the City of Brussels covers 32.6 km2. It has a population of 148,873, or a population density of 4,566 inhabitants per km2 (as at 1st January 2008).
